As you quite probably don’t need reminding, a certain amount of additional training each year is required by all solicitors and lawyers practicing in the UK. Current CPD (continuous personal development) requirements stand at 16 hours every year, and at least a quarter of these hours need to be spent doing accredited training courses. That’s four hours in an entire year, which is not that much by anyone’s standards, although you can of course choose to do more.

Taking the positives from additional legal training

Though some may grumble at the prospect of ‘having to’ undertake extra legal training, with the right attitude it can be not only a valuable educational experience, but even an enjoyable one.

For one thing it can provide you with a much needed break from your everyday routine, and if you feel you’ve been getting into something of a rut recently in your career or your life in general, it can help to shake you out of it.Stagnation is rarely a good feeling, and training can keep you moving forward with a fresh attitude and approach to your work.

Additional legal training can give you a chance to learn something new and gain a fresh perspective. It can also provide you with the chance to meet lots of new people, with whom you can share ideas and experiences, and possibly make new friends and professional connections.

It can also give you a considerable sense of satisfaction in learning new things and sharpening your skills. This in turn can make your work enjoyable by being able to better help people and perform more effectively in your job.

Expanding your practice

In some cases, extra legal training can open up whole new avenues for you and take your career in an entirely different and potentially more lucrative direction. Personal injury training is one area that is currently proving exceedingly popular with legal professionals young and old, and can unlock the door to a lot of potential work.

Every day people are injured in accidents that were not their fault and subsequently seek to pursue compensation. Whether they’ve suffered a road traffic accident, an accident at work or a trip/slip in a public place, they’re going to need someone to handle their claim. With the right training, that someone could be you.

Extra legal training can also open up new employment opportunities with recruiting law firms. Not only will you have more skills and a greater breadth of experience to offer a prospective employer, but undertaking regular training also shows that you’re keen to progress in your career and are capable of taking proactive action to develop yourself.

Meeting your CPD requirements needn’t be hard work

So although it is certainly necessary to meet annual CPD requirements, undertaking extra legal training doesn’t have to be a chore, and can take your career in directions you might not previously have envisioned. It can be an enjoyable and worthwhile experience that enriches your professional life, both now and in the future.
