Whether you choose an external training source or decide to coach your staff members in-house, do your training officers really know what you want? Are you all singing from the same hymn sheet and moving collectively towards the same goal? Or are your training providers pulling in the opposite direction and effectively sabotaging your efforts to imbue your staff with new skills and best practice methods?

Training is an extremely important factor of business and employment, so getting this wrong could be a complete waste of time and money. Having staff returned without the necessary skills or experience gained means you will have lost out on productivity for no reason at all. You have to ask yourself – do you trust your training provider to take control without you being present to micro-manage? If not, it may be time to go back to the drawing board.

The Team That Plans Together Trains Together…

The most important and critical factor to getting your training right is communication; right across the board. If using an external training provider, you must make it absolutely clear what your objectives and requirements are from the outset. This could be anything from personal injury training to financial and legal training. Do not skip on any details; make sure both parties know exactly what is to be done.

Ensure that you are completely satisfied with the training material and work alongside the external providers to achieve the desired results. The most important factors to consider when instructing your training providers are as follows:

• Timescales – how long you have to complete the training?
• Desired results – what skills you need your employees to gain before returning to work?
• Current skill level of employees – will help you decide on timescales
• Scale of training – whether it’s mass or individual training.

Remember, as long as your plan is thorough, you should have no issues and everyone should pull in the same direction. It may be worth arranging a meeting with the external trainers and setting out a planning document you can both adhere to.

External and Internal Harmony

If you do not wish to use an external training provider, it does not mean you cannot make use of their help at all. These professional practitioners are here to advise as well as assist. An external training provider can assist in designing and creating your in-house training program or create one from scratch for you. This can help save a lot of time and take a big responsibility from an employer’s hands. Being an expert in a field and industry is one thing, but knowing how to pass those skills and knowledge on is another. You may find it difficult to teach others your expertise.

As long as your external training provider understands completely what you want, the burden of planning your program can be taken care of, leaving you to execute the campaign successfully in-house by yourself. Whether you are a delegate or an employer, you require the same thing – effective, intriguing and useful training. If an outside source can help you achieve this, then why not take advantage of it?
