Boosting your reputation with extra training

A good business reputation can take years to build. Once you have that good reputation, you have to ensure that it is continually maintained through developing skills within your team and demonstrating to both the public and your peers that your reputation is well earned. One of the best ways to enhance your business’s reputation is through additional training for your staff, allowing them to grow and develop with the business.

Learning something new

While continuous personal training is a requirement in some professions, it shouldn’t just be viewed as an obligation. Rather it should be seen as an opportunity to expand your company’s repertoire of what it can offer to clients. For example, if your firm specialises in property law or criminal procedure, training your staff to deal with compensation claims or personal injury litigation could open up a new marketplace for you. If you already have an established reputation as a firm that can be trusted in property or criminal law, that good name will be transferred over to your dealings in injury compensation litigation through association.

Reinforcing existing skills

In a constantly changing world, nobody can say that they know everything there is to know about a certain subject. New legislation and best practice methods are being introduced all the time. If your company doesn’t keep up with those developments, you could find yourself being left on the sideline as other more dynamic companies take the lead. So training that reinforces existing skills and areas of expertise shows both your clients and your peers that you are willing to learn new aspects of existing skills that can only serve to enhance your reputation further.

Is it cost effective?

In house training is a cost-effective way of enhancing your company’s skills set and as a result, improving your reputation. Group training in particular can show a substantial return on your initial investment by providing new skills to all your staff rather than just a select few.

Thanks to a reappraisal of the true value of ‘worth’ people are now less interested in what your office looks like, for example, and are far more concerned with how good your company is at representing their interests skilfully and effectively. Superficial concerns are now being superseded by a desire for a quality service provided by well-trained and experienced professionals. Continual training and professional development has much more value to your clients and by proving that your firm is willing to expand its knowledge base and skills sets, the return on your training expenditure will far outweigh the initial costs.

A better reputation among your peers

Training your staff in the latest developments and new practice areas can also improve your reputation within the industry. By demonstrating a broad skills base and showing that your firm is willing to continually develop their knowledge and expertise, it will naturally enhance your reputation within the industry. Being seen as the ‘go to’ people for injury compensation claims, for example, can also raise your profile among those who would not normally consider your firm as a first port of call.

Personal recommendations are just as vital as ‘walk ins’ or contacts made through advertising. By adopting a policy of continual personal development and training within your organisation, you can establish a reputation that encourages those personal recommendations and consequently enhances your standing within the industry.
