In-house legal training is a potent way of reinvigorating your organisation and opening new doors. But to get the most out of it you really do need to have not only a good trainer, but the one that’s right for your firm and its current circumstances. Here are a few things you should look for when you’re trying to identify the perfect in-house training partner.

Experience – Having a substantial body of experience is perhaps one of the most crucial characteristics to look for in a trainer. As with any other sector or area of life, the best teachers are those who have ‘been there and done that’, so don’t be afraid to ask questions and discover precisely how much experience your prospective trainers have and the specifics of it. Clearly you will want them to have extensive field experience of the things they teach, rather than just knowledge that they have absorbed from books or classes.

Up to date – You should also ensure that they are actively striving to keep their training as up to date as possible, particularly given how fast the legal world can change.

Prepared to listen, and Flexible – Some trainers have a very definite idea about what they are going to teach and how they are going to go about it. But every organisation is different, and applying the exact same approach to every one rarely delivers optimal results. Try to find a trainer that is prepared to listen to what you want, is willing to learn a little about your firm and then adjust their approach accordingly.

Open and attentive – You’re the one paying for the legal training, so look for a trainer that will keep you well-informed and ‘in the loop’ throughout the process. As well as updating you on the progress made, they may also be able to point out anything that they have noticed that you may want to pay closer attention to.

Good reputation – Just as your clients are on the look-out for a firm with a positive and well-established reputation, so too should you be when seeking a trainer. Ask around and do some research on the Internet. Most firms will publish testimonials from previous clients on their own website, but don’t go by this alone, as these inevitably seek to put the company in the best light.

A good match – It’s about you as much as it is about them. Do their methods of delivering legal training suit your company, do they offer what you specifically require, and are they capable of delivering it exceptionally? If you’re not sure, ask.

Once you’ve found an in-house trainer you can work with, it’s important that you communicate to them what you want specifically, while also trusting them to do their job. Most trainers will welcome input that enables them to better tailor their approach to their clients’ needs and deliver training that is more effective and appropriate. More importantly, by being clear about what you want, you’ll get the training that you need.
