In-house training could be one of the smartest investments you make in your business this year. Rather than seeing it as a ‘necessary evil’ and an expense to the business, look upon it as an opportunity to invest not only in your business, but in your team as well.

But to get the best ROI on your training courses, you need to know how to get the most out of every session. So here’s a quick point-by-point guide to getting the most out of your in-house training.

#1 – Go in with a plan
Rather than just phoning up a training provider and saying, “I want some training for my team”, have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. By having a roadmap from the outset, you can guide the training provider in the direction that you want them to go. So for example if you feel that your junior staff need a ‘best practice’ session for face-to-face sessions with clients, make sure your training provider tailors the training around this primary goal.

#2 – Don’t try to tell the trainer how to do their job!
This may seem counter to point #1, but remember that initiating a training programme is a two-way process. While you need to give your trainer clear guidelines as to what you want to achieve, respect the fact that they are professional trainers and will often know far more about the intricacies of the training process than you do. Respect their opinion and listen to their advice.

#3 – Ask your staff what they want to achieve
Before you call your training provider in, talk to your team and find out what they want to achieve out of the session. They may be able to help you and your training provider refine a programme that delivers the salient points in the most time efficient and cost-effective way.

#4 – Bear in mind outside influences
The current changes to personal injury legislation will have a huge impact on the legal profession, so why not use your training opportunity to get bang up to date with best practice methodology and get your team up to speed on the new laws?

#5 – In-house or off-site training?
Consider which type of training is going to deliver the best results. It’s not just the financial cost that you need to think about, either. Off-site training may be more expensive when it comes to paying for travel and accommodation, but it can be invaluable in building links with other firms or professionals. It gives your team a chance to expand their contact network. However, in-house is more cost-effective and doesn’t have such an impact on the day to day running of your business, as team members are still on-site.

#6 – Follow-up training
Remember that training isn’t finite. While your team may benefit from a single training session, booking a series of different courses will not only ensure that you get a fully rounded picture of the topic, but it will also keep your team interested in learning more about the subject. Multiple training sessions can also be more cost-effective than a ‘one here and one there’ approach, as you may be able to negotiate a discount with your provider.
