Understanding Medical Reports and Medical Records

For those outside the medical profession, understanding medical reports and medical records can present something of a challenge. Often they are full of acronyms, abbreviations and specialist terminology, so much so that ‘medical speak’ can seem like a language all of its own.

However, as a personal injury lawyer, it is necessary to study both medical reports and medical records on a regular basis.

As a personal injury lawyer, you will know that a typical claim requires you to obtain your client’s medical records, which you must then scour for Understanding Medical Reports and Medical Recordsrelevant information. You will also likely need to instruct a medical expert to prepare a report on your client’s condition and prognosis. A breach of duty report may also be needed, especially if you run a clinical negligence caseload.

It is absolutely vital that you understand everything that is contained in both the medical records and the reports, as it could be essential to the success of your client’s claim. You therefore need to have a firm understanding of all those medical acronyms, abbreviations and terms, or you could miss something important.

Having a firm grip on medical language will also ensure that you can communicate with the defendant, counsel and expert witnesses more comfortably, as you will have a solid understanding of the subject. Otherwise you will always be on the back foot, and as a claimant lawyer, that is somewhere you do not want to be!
